Mapping high HIV transmission areas

Geospatial map of sub-Saharan Africa showing HIV transmission hotspotsFigure by Caroline Bulstra

HIV incidence varies sharply within countries, but national programmes often plan at a scale that hides this. Using nationally representative survey data from across sub-Saharan Africa, we mapped subnational patterns of HIV transmission at high spatial resolution.

The analysis characterised the demographic and behavioural profiles of high-transmission areas, showing how geographically targeted prevention and treatment could reach the people and places carrying the greatest burden.
